Annual Cooling and Heating Loads Are Much Higher Than Expected for a Single Office Model

Hello everyone,

I am an undergraduate student from South Korea conducting my graduation research using Honeybee and Ladybug Tools. I would really appreciate any advice.

I am simulating a single office space inside an office building. The model represents only one office room, not the entire building.

My model setup is as follows:

  • Honeybee / Ladybug Tools 1.10
  • EnergyPlus annual simulation
  • Seoul EPW weather file
  • South façade: curtain wall (window)
  • North, east, west walls, roof, and floor are all set to Adiabatic because I assume there is no heat transfer to adjacent spaces.
  • Ideal Air Loads HVAC
  • Office Program with modified schedules
  • Cooling and heating schedules are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays.
  • Annual Loads is used to calculate the cooling and heating loads.

However, the annual cooling and heating loads are much higher than I expected.

I have already checked or modified the following:

  • Construction Set
  • Window properties (SHGC, U-value)
  • Internal loads (People, Lighting, Equipment)
  • Cooling and heating setpoints
  • Ventilation and infiltration
  • Natural ventilation settings
  • Adiabatic boundary conditions

Despite these changes, the cooling load remains much higher than expected.

Since this is only a single office room, I expected the annual cooling and heating loads to be much lower.

Could anyone help me identify what I might be doing wrong, or suggest what else I should check?

It would be nice to give specific numbers rather than “much higher than expected”, so we can try to help you :slight_smile:

The expected values are that the annual cooling load and the annual heating load are 1–8 kWh/m²…

I am a Korean student, but there is no one around me who can help. I want to know what the problem is in my algorithm configuration or data settings.
