Butterfly for indoor CFD analysis

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using Butterfly over the past few days to analyze indoor airflow for one of my projects. Since I don’t have much experience with CFD simulations, I’d like to ask a couple of questions.

At the moment, I’ve got something running with Butterfly version 0.0.05. I also tried installing version 0.0.2, but couldn’t get it to work properly.
Since Butterfly isn’t part of the latest Ladybug Tools release, I’m wondering: is it currently being actively developed?
Are there any plans to include Butterfly in one of the upcoming releases of Ladybug Tools?

Also, has anyone used Butterfly for CFD simulations in a production environment? To me, it sometimes feels a bit buggy and unreliable.
As an alternative, I also looked into Eddy3D, even though there are some components for indoor studies, it seems more tailored towards outdoor airflow analysis.

I’d really appreciate it if you could share your thoughts or experiences on this.

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Simon!

I’m actually in your exact situation, I’m also getting into Eddy3D, most of our projects are indoor optimization, not outdoor. I gave up on Butterfly and I’m not a proper code to actually contribute to updating it.

You probably know Philip Galvan, he has a good video on the whole situation, too.

Sadly the CFD’s project start after summer, so right now personally I’m unable to give proper feedback, but for sure i’ll keep the forum updated, since we want to link the results with Energyplus/Ladybug Tools.

Best of luck!
