Installation issues

I am really disappointed in the state of installing LadyBug right now. As far as I remember I was able to use the .gh installer for 1.8.0 and still have that version installed on another computer running just fine from quite a while ago. I couldn’t get the .gh installer for 1.9.0 working on this computer so I downloaded the one click Pollination installer and am being met with components labeled as “OLD” as well as this error “1. Solution exception:Access to the path ‘C:\Users*username*.ladybug\ladybug.log’ is denied.”

I have found a number of other users experiencing the same issue across various forums but cannot for the life of me determine what the solution is. One user even suggested using the update component that is part of LadyBug which is obviously a useless suggestion.

Why did you all decide to absolutely ruin the experience of using LadyBug for anyone not interested in more than the .gh component? No other GH plugin I can think of requires this many hoops to be jumped through for installation.

hi,@yeahno

:sweat_smile:I can sense that you have many opinions on the issues related to installation, but this does not mean that it can solve the problems.

I have demonstrated and introduced the two installation methods of Grasshopper and Pollination to at least several thousand people. Only a very small number of users had situations that required my additional intervention. In this situation, I can still make both of these installation methods work sufficiently well.

As far as I know, the installation process of ladybug has remained unchanged, regardless of whether you are using LBT 1.3 or 1.9. The Pollination installer is an additional method that reduces the burden on users during the installation process. It can significantly address what you consider to be cumbersome installation steps.

My suggestion is that you should observe how other people on the forum handle seeking help for certain issues. This will enable more people to assist you.But please do not put additional pressure on the excellent development team of Ladybug Tools due to personal reasons.

best.

Linking to a demonstration of this would be appreciated, because I have tried both methods openly available, uninstalled, reinstalled, and am still having no luck. I can’t use the components to update because I am receiving the error I listed in the initial post; LBT still works fine on my other PC

Posting the solution I found for posterity since I was unable to find any others who could solve it for me; I had to navigate to the folder and allow access for all accounts on my current machine.

Hi,

There are few pointers about installation through pollination and GH installer. Hopefully it might help anyone facing similar challenges. Please be aware that this pointers are specific to PCs with Windows OS only.

  1. Installation through pollination:
Please be minded it is easy to install LB tools through this mode but have challenges when you wish to upgrade version. It’s my observation that LB versioner component doesn’t help. You have to uninstall the pollination like any other application and reinstall the new version (either pollination or GH installer).

  2. Installation through GH workflow:
The zip file downloaded from Food4Rhino website needs to be unblocked before unzipping. Right click on the zipped folder and select Properties option. A tab opens up where u can find “Unblock” check box on bottom side. Usually, Windows OS of home edition do not need this step. Yet, it’s better to check ahead.
Next step you can unzip folder and drag the installer to Grasshopper environment. Out of 2 Boolean toggles, you can set True the first one without hesitation. However, please be minded that your internet is strong and has good download speed before setting the second Boolean toggle True. If this step is not proper, you will see the warning “Failed to import ladybug” after restart of Rhino. In such case, please use Uninstaller GH workflow to remove the half installation. After that Installer GH workflow should be used to retry installation.
