Publication: Energy Flexibility and Management Software in Building Clusters: A Comprehensive Review

Dear Developers and Ladybug users,

@chris
@MingboPeng
@mostapha

Happy to share my latest paper, “Energy Flexibility and Management Software in Building Clusters: A Comprehensive Review.”

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2949821X25000134

This study reviews 243 software tools (203 commercial and 40 open-source) designed for energy management in buildings and districts, evaluating their capabilities in demand response, renewable energy integration, and real-time control. Interestingly, while only 20% of commercial software provides robust energy flexibility, 73% of open-source tools—including those frequently used in the Ladybug Tools community—demonstrate strong potential. The paper also highlights key challenges such as scalability, benchmarking, interoperability, and the need for AI-driven analytics.

I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for the Ladybug Tools developers. Your work has been instrumental in advancing open-source solutions for urban energy modeling. This research underscores how tools like Ladybug, Honeybee, Dragonfly, and URBANopt play a crucial role in bridging the gap between research and practical implementation in energy flexibility.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback!

Thanks again to this amazing community!

Sincerely,
Behnam
