Hi, i am reaching out here hoping for someone to help me. I don’t know if I am the only one experiencing this type of problem but I don’t know how to fix this. I have been working on rhino/grasshopper/honeybee for a month without any problem but yesterday I opened it again to continue my light analysis and as soon as I opened my grasshopper file rhino and grasshopper itself crashed without leaving a note. I tried everything I could to at least understand what was going on. At first, I diseabled any kind of antivirus (I personally use BitDefender), then I reinstalled rhino 7 instead of 8 and then I did the same with ladybug. Nothing helped me. Whenever I do something which envolves ladybug, everything crashes. I beg someone who does know anything about this to help me getting back on track as soon as possibile.
Hi @Alessandro1 ,
I would try a couple things to identify the problem:
- When you open Grasshopper, right-click and ‘lock’ the solver so that you can open your file without any execution. When locked, you should see a red border around the window, and the file should open without issue.
- Once open, selecta all of the components, then right-click on the canvas and choose ‘deactivate’. All of the components are now ‘off’. You should now be able to ‘unlock’ the Grasshopper solver now without seeing any errors.
- You now need to try and identify which component is causing the error. You can either go through and select then ‘activate’ (right click after selecting) one at a time, or use a sort of binary sort (turn on the left half, see if it crashes, if it does, turn on the left half of the left half, and so on until you can locate the problem component or components)
- Try and determine the most minimal component or set of components which causes the problem.
- When posting questions to the forum, it is very helpful to include your system config (Windows / Mac OS version, Rhino version, LBT version, etc…)
hope that helps!
best,
@edpmay
Hi, thank you very much for your help and your time. I am sorry, I understand I should have been more precise describing my situation. First of all, let me tell my system config:
- Intel(R) Core™ i7-14700HX, Windows 11 Home 25H2, Rhino 8 (also tried on Rhino 7), Ladybug 1.9.0. If any other info is needed, please let me know
After that, I must confess I actually tried to lock the all grasshopper canva because I was thinking a single component was causing the crash. So then I tried placing a single Ladybug/Honeybee component on a new GH file but everything still crashed. I came to the conclusion that the problem was not the single GH file, but the LBT plugin itself which was not working anymore like it should.
Another post on this forum was posted a while ago talking about this issue, but it has been solved (if I got it right) by diseabling the antivirus on the computer. It did not work for me though.
The decision I took was to delete every file that was connected to this version of Ladybug but after reinstalling it again the situation did not change.
Update: I did what @edpmay suggested me to do. I first tried locking the all canva, then I diseabled everything and turned off the lock. Rhino and Grasshopper still crashed even if everything was diseabled.
- Does it crash if you create a new blank Grasshopper file?
- Does it crash if you create a new blank Grasshopper file and add any single LBT component to the canvas?
- Are you saying that even with all of the components ‘disabled’, Grasshopper still crashes when you ‘unlock’ the solver? Is this the case for any GH file, or just that specific one?
One thing you might try to see if it is a conflict with any other plugins you have installed is to load grasshopper in ‘One-by-One’ mode, and to say ‘no’ to every other plugin except Ladybug.Grasshopper.gha and GhPython.gha.
You can use the command GrasshopperLoadOneByOne from Rhino to start Grasshopper this way:
Then see if you can add an LBT component to the canvas without crashing?
hope that helps!
@edpmay
Hi @edpmay and thanks again for trying to help me. I really appreciate it. So, I have been trying to do what you suggested me and this is what happens:
- No, It does not crash when I only use GH components such as geometries or functions. It crashes when I use any LBT objects
- Yes It is exactly the point of my situation
- Well, It depends. I currently have 6 or 7 files which I used to use when It all still worked, and the worst scenario is that when I diseable everything and I turn the lock off everything crashes. The best scenario, on the other hand, is that when I turn the lock off after diseabling everything Grasshopper still runs and I can turn any GH components on, but as soon as I turn any LBT component on, It crashes. I can’t tell the variable which make a file running or not running after turning the lock off.
I also tried the command GrasshopperLoadOnebyOne loading just the two plug-ins you told me to leave, but still I cannot drag a LBT without Rhino and Grasshopper to crash.
same here. any answer?
Check if you have an outdated graphic card’s driver or other rendering plugins:
Hi, thank you very much for your help! I tried to disintall the D5 render LiveSync plugin and, also, this morning a new Rhino update came out and I updated it.
It actually worked and I can now use Grasshopper, LBT and Honeybee like I used to do.
I will write something about if It will start crashing again, but at the moment everything started running again. Thank to everyone who helped me, I really appreciated it.
